Autumn 2

Autumn 2

Fantastic Beasts

This half term our topic is Fantastic Beasts and all of our subjects relate to this. Our English text is ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’ and we will be studying the language and techniques used by the author as we explore the magical creatures before creating and writing about our own.
Following our work last half term on Number and Place Value we move onto Addition and Subtraction this half term including using mental strategies and problem solving.
In Science we will work on the topic ‘Animals and their Habitats’. We

will be classifying animals focussing on their Life Cycles. Our final Art piece is a detailed sketch of our Fantastic Beast after developing skills in using texture, line and shade. In Music we’re looking at the History of Music including learning about ‘Peter and the Wolf’s’ composer Sergei Prokofiev.

….and after all of that we’ll just about about have enough energy at the end of half term to enjoy our traditional ‘Holly Hill’ style Christmas.
We cannot wait! 😂

Please see the Knowledge Organiser at the top to see the details of our learning.

Our final piece of Science work for this half term. We have looked at animal classification and have devised our own ‘yes’ ‘no’ questions to sort and classify animals. The discussion during this paired activity was fabulous. Well done Owls.

Thursday 15th December

Christmas Dinner and Jumper Day

🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

We’ve started to put together all our skills that we’ve been practising in art this half term to produce our final piece. I think these look pretty impressive already!

Tuesday 13th December. It’s always a winner when the Panto comes to town and today’s performance of Cinderella did not disappoint.

Wednesday 7th December

Our very first Holly Hill Christingle took place today. We started with an assembly by the Reverend Lee followed by Christingle making in classrooms.  We then held our special service where the children lit their Christingle, the Reverend Lee said prayers and readings and we sang songs. What a lovely start to Christmas festivities.

Monday 5th December

More Music today- listening to the different groups in the orchestra and identifying what the instruments are. We finished the lesson with a quiz…… by the end of it the children were getting really good at identifying the different sounds of the orchestra.

Christmas has come early to Holly Hill and the children were so excited to have fun this morning with Buddy the Elf and Santa. The children got some time in the snow globe and then got to chat to Santa and have their picture taken too.

Friday 2nd December. Maths Tough 10 and Times Tables Practise.

Monday 28th November

Music

Over the last three weeks we’ve been learning about the history of Music. We’ve plotted periods of music history on a timeline. We’ve listened to the music and identified characteristics in music from periods such as the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. We’ve identified and listened to the instruments from the four groups in an orchestra.
Owls ……. Can you tell your adults what the four groups are? 😁🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Friday 25th November. SCIENCE-Learning about animal Life Cycles and being able to compare them to each other.

Wednesday 23rd November

Writing our reports for our own JK Rowling style beast. Today we focussed on the ‘Appearance’ section. We are getting really good at editing our own work in order to improve it. Each day we’ll be writing a new section until we have a full Beastly Reports.

Tuesday 22nd November

Silence this morning as we work on our Fantastic Beast descriptions. We worked on SPaG first using colons and commas in lists. We then tried to include some of these sentences in our writing.
Well done Owls….. I can’t wait to read your descriptions!

Tuesday 15th November. Using our design sheet to help us gather thoughts and ideas for our own creature creation.

Monday 14th November.. Odd sock day at the start of anti- bullying week.

Important Visit to School

Today we had a visit from our community PCOs who came to talk to the Year 5s and 6s about Knife Crime. The children were really interested and there was a lot of constructive discussion back in the classroom after the visit.

Friday 11th November.

Today, as a whole school we joined together for a two minute silence for Remembrance Day. This was ended by us listening to the Last Post. We had a chat in class about the significance of this and the children’s responses were really thoughtful and mature.

Wednesday 9th November

There was some fabulous art work today. We started sketching techniques and today focussed on ‘line’.

Tuesday 8th November. Enjoying English today. Reading extracts from our texts and using the information about habitat to best place our beast on a map of Selston. We have also used inference skills to help with this.

Looking forward to seeing parents on Parents’ Evening

on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Tuesday 8th November. We’re very proud to show you our completed models.

Monday 7th November. Using the internet to research information about animals groups including information on life cycles and how they reproduce.

Friday 4th November

To finish off our topic from last half term today we made our Cam models. The children worked with a buddy, following the instructions in their little booklet to complete their chosen design. Final photos of completed models to follow.

Monday 31st October
