Autumn 1

Autumn 1 - Knowledge Organiser

In Science this term, we will be learning about Forces and Magnets. We will be investigating that forces are pushes or pulls, that forces will change the motion of an object and that either will make it start to move, speed up, slow it down or even make it stop. We will investigate different surfaces creating different amounts of friction, depending on the roughness of the surface and the object. We will learn that magnets have two poles (North and South), like poles repel, opposite poles attract. That a magnetic field is invisible and that magnetic forces do not need direct contact to interact.

In Art, we will be finding out about Stan Lee who created the Marvel comic universe to promote ideas of inclusivity. We will be developing shading skills to accurately depict lighting in a picture. Learning that different shapes and stick figures can be used as a basis for the human figure. We will be creating sequences of drawings to design a cartoon strip to form a narrative with text in balloons and captions.

In Computing, we will learn the internet is a series of networks, that information is shared across the internet, and needs protecting and that the internet is used to provide many services. We will learn the World Wide Web is part of the internet that contains websites and webpages.

Visiting our local church to find out what happens and what we can find inside a church. We learnt about holy communion, how the font is used for baptising, what can be seen an the stained class windows, about The Lord’s Prayer and that the vicar stands on a pulpit and reads from the bible placed on a lectern.

In Science, we investigates if different materials will stop a magnetic force. It was very interesting and fun!

Art today has been full of amazing superhero comic strip ideas full of comedy. We’ve designed our own superheroes thinking about the costume designs and super powers. We listened to exciting superhero soundtrack music while we put our artistic talents to work. We had lots of fun!

We’ve been working hard to learn our 3 and 4 times tables. We’ve been learning that the numbers in the multiplication sum can be switched and the answer is always the same. Good luck for your test tomorrow Dove Class!

We’ve really enjoyed reading and finding out about Isobel Soares who promotes eating ‘ugly fruit’ to reduce food waste. Some of us even found Portugal on a map and globe to compare where we live to where she lives. We wrote super facts about her to use in our newspaper report.

In Art, we are learning about Stan Lee the Marvel creator. We have been practising the skills shading and sketching.

We are learning the features of a formal letter today so we looked at a letter already written and highlighted the addresses, the greeting and end goodbye, the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. Then, we used these features to begin planning writing a letter to Mohammad Rezwan who is a boat architect.

In English, we have been learning about Mohammad Rezwan from our book 'Earth Heroes'. He is a boat architect of floating schools. He is a true Earth Hero, having designed and made floating schools, learning centres, libraries, medical clinics, farms and homes. His work has really got Dove Class considering the positive impact he has made on the community he lives in, in Bangladesh. His innovative ideas and creations have changed people's lives and we talked about how resilient this community is towards climate change and the way it has impacted on their lives.

In guided reading, we have been learning about Stella McCartney. We found out about the Paris Fashion Show where she showed her designs made from recycled bottles and man-made spider’s silk. We highlighted the answers to questions to show our understanding of the text.

We have been learning about vowels and consonants to use ‘a’ and ‘an’ correctly. We used highlighters to spot the mistakes in a story.

Quiet reading time in Dove Class- We love a good book!

All the children have made a wonderful start to their school year in Dove Class. We've been very busy already making jigsaw pieces to show how well Dove Class fit together.

Working hard in Maths to complete place value work.

Showing how well we know our times tables by playing a timed game.

In science, we have been learning about Forces and Magnets. We used magnets to discover magnetic objects in our classroom. It was lots of fun!
