Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School

Autumn 1

Here is our Knowledge Organiser for this half term. Our exciting topic is Great Explorers.

Friday 20th October

The end of term is always busy but I think today was the busiest of days. We held our ‘Show racism the Red Card’ day. The children loved wearing red for the day. Following Mrs Cordon’s assembly this week we talked about some of the issues raised. It was also our Friends of Holly Hill ‘ Carve a Pumpkin’ competition. All of the pumpkins were absolutely fabulous and looked amazing decorating our classroom for the day. And to top it off all Year 5 and 6 classes were preparing food as part of out DT cuisines from around the world work. We made Bombay potatoes and Mediterranean pasta salad. I actually don’t think that anyone will want any tea tonight!

Happy half term Owls.
Have a lovely holiday and a good rest and see you all in 2 weeks.

🎃😁🎃😁🎃😁🎃😁

The amazing pumpkins with Kyla just pipping the post. Well done all!

Our Bombay potatoes didn’t look too great but the children will tell you.... They were yummy! 😊

It was also wet play all day today! Normally we still venture out but it was even too wet for Holly Hill today! The children LOVED being able to play games and be creative with their friends which was actually so lovely to see.

Friday 13th October

Black Excellence Day

Today we celebrated our Holly Hill Black Excellence Day as part of Black History month. We looked at the contributions to society of three black British individuals. We looked at the work of  the footballer Eniola Aluko, author Majorie Blackman and famous singer, songwriter and rapper Stormzy. We’ve answered key questions about the trio, produced a Stormsy style rap about diversity, inclusion, ambition and perseverance to name just a few areas. We produced some artwork and also some word arts too.
Well done Owl Class…… some of the raps were fabulous and I can’t wait until they’re finished and ready to perform.

Thursday 12th October

Internet Legends Assembly

Today we took part in the Internet Legends Assembly.  The assembly was about being safe on-line, about what is acceptable to post on the internet and what is not. It focussed on mental well being.  The children loved it and were able to take part in the assembly.

Wednesday 11th October

Today we had an NSPCC workshop following Mrs Steed’s assembly last week. The children were able to talk about things that may make them feel sad, lonely or hurt in some way. We talked about types of abuse and where children could seek help if necessary. The children filled in a ‘Happy Card’ and made a little game to help them remember what they had learnt in the session.

Tuesday 10th October. Testing thermal conductors and insulators as part of our properties of materials work.

11.10.23 In Mrs Cordon’s Maths class, we used the cubes to build physical representations of square and cube numbers.

Monday 9th October. We’re continuing to develop attacking and defence skills and today had some fabulous games of hand ball.

Friday 6th October

Sharing experiences of and researching the cuisines of the World as part of our DT food.

Wednesday 4th October. Map focus. Reading coordinates and grid references.

Friday 29th September. Playing our properties of Materials Vocabulary game.

Thursday 29th September. Colon and semi colon song

Friday 22nd September

Georgraphy was great fun today and Owls loved making their world balloons. We learnt all about the lines of longitude and latitude and the children were able to show these on their world representations.
Only two balloons burst in the making of our models 😂

Wednesday 20th September. Testing materials in Science before comparing them. We have made vocabulary and definition cards so that we can play matching pairs. This will help us learn properties of materials and their definitions.

Friday 15th September. DT - Learning about food groups. Researching the best foods for taking on expedition and planning a daily food allowance for an Arctic explorer taking into account needing calories for energy but also being mindful of not being able to carry a lot or cook the food. It was a challenge!

13.09.23 In Mrs Cordon’s maths group we either love this song or hate it- but one thing is for sure, it’s really helped us recognising numbers in the millions! 🤩

12.09.23 In Maths with Mrs Cordon, the Owl Year 6s worked on representing numbers up to 100,000. They used counters, digits and words for each given number. Next we’ll be moving on to the millions!

Tuesday 12th September. Checking meanings of vocabulary during Guided Reading.

Monday 11th September

Today we started PE with Mr Ellis. Some fabulous attacking and defending was seen today. Well done Owls.

Thursday 7th September

Today we began our Great Explorers topic with our Wow day. We carried out a range of activities including learning about how animals keep warm in the arctic with  their layer of protective blubber. In our experiment we tested to see if having a layer of blubber (fat) actually kept our hand in the icy water for longer.

We learnt about glaciers and icebergs before painting some.  We watched clips to see how global warming and other factors are effecting this part of the world.

We learnt how to draw a compass plotting the points correctly.

The best part of our Wow day may have been making our sledging biscuits. These would have been used as a main food supply as explorers spent months on their expeditions.  Owl class actually loved them and many wanted the recipe so that they could make more at home 😁

Wednesday 6th September. Sharing books with friends and some quiet time on the first day back.
