Autumn 1

Scroll down for weekly updates on all our learning adventures! Our topic this half term is...

20.10.23 What an amazing day! We didn’t let the rainy wet plays dampen our spirit, as today was our cooking day! In Design Technology, we made an Indian and Mediterranean dish and compared them. The children had mixed feelings, but we mostly loved our creations!

Patiently waiting for our creations 🤤

Our first reaction to trying Bombay Potatoes... 👏

20.10.23 Two very proud boys, who wrote a letter to Mrs Steed proposing that Y6 be allowed to sit on benches in assemblies. She gladly accepted, and the children are looking forward to proving how trustworthy they can be. Well done Lucas and Ethan - I’m so proud of you!! 🦢 🤩

Well done wonderful heroes! 🤩🦢

13.10.23 Looking amazing in our own clothes to raise money for FOHH!

13.10.23 On Black Excellence Day, we discussed the meaning behind Stormzy’s song ‘Superheroes’ and how diversity and inclusivity are important messages. We then wrote our own Stormzy inspired rap around the theme of diversity, using his idea of mentioning other significant black people in our raps. Scroll down to hear a few!

Charlie was very proud to be wearing this shirt on Black Excellence Day ⚽️

13.10.23 We spent some of Black Excellence Day exploring Miss Fretwell’s ever-growing collection of diverse books. We loved learning about talented people and were inspired by their stories!

12.10.23 Today was the third of our Internet Safety assemblies, where we learnt about tips for staying safe and happy online.

... stay tuned until the end to hear us get a shoutout!

11.10.23 Year 6 had a workshop from the NSPCC about speaking out and staying safe.

06.10.23 Our wonderful writing heroes this week! 🦢 🤩

05.10.23 This week really has been a week all about writing: we have concluded our biographies about explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. I was blown away by the shared writing Swans and I did - to inspire their own writing, we practised sharing ideas and these are some of the drafts we came up with. I can’t take much credit for this - Swans were bursting with ideas for me to write down! This was pre-editing, but WOW!!💡

04.10.23 Today’s Pentecost lesson in R.E concluded with a Kahoot Quiz to test our knowledge - we all did amazing, but here are the champions!

We acted out the details of the Pentecost story and created freeze frames. We loved this!

I love the sound of hard-working, meaningful talk in the classroom. This morning, we let the dice decide how to extend our sentences to make them more interesting. We loved this activity, and it got our writing off to a great start!

29.09.23 In Jigsaw, we played ‘who can think of the most different chocolate bars?’ Spoiler alert - Zander won!! We then went on to talk about how some children aren’t as lucky as us to be able to go to a shop and buy their favourite chocolate bar. Swans had such a mature conversation about children working on cocoa plantations in Ghana, and I was super impressed how they could switch between a fun game about chocolate to an empathetic reflection on how some universal rights are not met.

28.09.23 Heroes is on Monday next week, so here’s a teaser. Who do you think this fabulous writing belongs to?

22.09.23 Well done to some more fabulous heroes this week! 🤩

22.09.23 In Science, we tested the properties of materials! We tested transparency, durability, flexibility, permeability and response to magnets. We worked hard at drawing our own table to record our results in too 👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬

Some of our AMAZING introductions to our information texts on Robert Falcon Scott, inspired by author Alastair Humphreys. Our challenge was to use superlatives and hyperbole- can you spot them? Next week, we’ll be editing and writing the main body of text. Stay tuned!

We’ve also started our research about famous explorer Robert Falcon Scott ahead of writing an information text next week! ✍️

20.09.23 In Design Technology, we did different movements to answer our knowledge check about nutrition. 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

19.09.23 Some of our wonderful English work from last week - I’m so impressed with Swans for their hard work 🦢

18.09.23 Another great P.E lesson, where we worked on creating space to attack.

15.09.23 Well done to Jack and Freya, who are our super heroes this week!

11.09.23 A fabulous Monday made even better by P.E with Mr Ellis! We are going to be working on our attacking and defending skills and today, we focused on using critical thinking to strategise and make tactical decisions.

08.09.23 What a wonderful Friday we’ve had! We started our day with our first piece of work in our new English books (which we were super excited about!) about our Holly Hill Way. We also did our first Jigsaw lesson and discussed any worries we have and what our goals are for the year ahead.

07.09.23 WOW day activity 1 - we learnt that animals in the Arctic have a layer of blubber to keep themselves warm in extremely low temperatures. We created a layer of our own blubber and tested it in cold water!

WOW day activity 2 - We learnt about Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his Terra Nova expedition. Captain Scott used to take ‘sledging biscuits’ with him on his adventures, so we made some and baked them! We weren’t impressed by the lack of sugar 😆

WOW day activity 3 - What floats your boat? We tested model boats to see which design floated the best!

WOW day activity 4- A masterclass in drawing polar bears. We did amazing at this!
