Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School

Year 5 and Year 6

Light. In years 5 and 6 children continue their learning about Light. They plan and carry out an investigation to prove or disprove the statement ‘Light travels in straight lines’ following their own predictions. Using practical equipment they set up a show piece to demonstrate how we see objects. They study shadows and learn about the relationship of shadows and the objects which cast the. They reinforce all of this learning by using and making their own periscopes.

Animals. In groups the children carried out independent research focussing on animal groups, life cycles and reproduction systems before putting all of their information together to create class posters. They have drawn a range of life cycles and then compared them. To complete the topic the children classified and sorted animals depending on their characteristics and developed their ability to draw classification keys.

The Circulatory System. Learning about the function of the Heart and how it pumps blood around the body. Learning about arteries, capillaries and veins. We carried out investigations to prove that the Heart beats faster after strenuous activity. The children then put their knowledge on an information poster.
