Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School

Public Sector Equality Duty

INTENT

Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School recognises that certain groups in society can be disadvantaged because of unlawful discrimination they may face due to their race, sex, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, or pregnancy and maternity.

HOW DOES HOLLY HILL COMPLY WITH THE PUBLIC SECTOR EQUALITY DUTY?

The school has a range of policies which make explicit the school’s long established commitment to actively promoting equality of opportunity for all. The main policies that deal with equality of opportunity are:

  • British Values
  • Accessibility plan
  • Equality policy
  • SEND policy
  • Behaviour and anti-bullying policy
  • Religious Education Policy
  • Curriculum intent

Holly Hill prides itself on being an inclusive school that cares for every individual child.  In doing so, we promote and deliver a range of strategies to ensure that we comply to the Public Sector Equality Duty.  Some of these include;

  • Active promotion of the school values: care, respect, ambition, happiness, curiosity and pride.
  • Unwavering inclusivity.
  • Using a variety of high quality texts to support English teaching that are mapped out to consider diversity.
  • Embedded use of the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which continually encourages and promotes the celebration of difference, tolerance and mutual respect.
  • Diversity a key aspect of our curriculum design.
  • Picture News assemblies exploring a breadth of national and international news stories as well as a variety of discussions and debates. Weekly focus linked to British Values.
  • Weekly British Values assembly linked to celebrations.
  • Weekly story time assembly covering a diverse range of authors, characters and key events.
  • Development of pupil voice to ensure that all groups are heard.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the attainment and progress of all pupils; looking at the performance of particular groups who share a protected characteristic to compare their performance with those who do not share it.
  • Supporting all staff and children to reach their potential
  • Interventions to maximise the progress of all groups of children
  • Records of extra-curricular participation kept to ensure that all children are encouraged to attend, participate and represent.

Equality Objectives Action Plan

Equality Information and Objectives Policy

Here you can see some of the ways that protected characteristics are represented through our core texts.

Every week in Singing Assembly, our pupils are introduced to a different artist of the week. These have been carefully chosen to ensure representation of artists across genres and backgrounds.

Each week, a member of our staff lead the school in a British Values assembly.

In story assembly, each week the pupils engage with a specially chosen book that links to a theme of diversity, equity, inclusion or belonging.

05.03.24 Our DEIB Ambassadors took part in Picture News training all about protected characteristics!

12.03.24 Today the DEIB Ambassadors took part in their British Values training!

This year each class in the school will spend some time looking at the life and works of some influential black Britons as part of a Holly Hill Black Excellence Day.
