Autumn 1

This half term, our topic is...

Reading in Kingfisher πŸ“š πŸ‘€

Our books this half-term are ‘The Lost Thing’ in English and ‘Varjak Paw’ as our class story.

We really value reading and want the children to have a love of reading. ❀️

As well as these books, they have a reading book to take home and a reading for pleasure book that they have chosen from the reading area in class. πŸ“– πŸ’

English - We have been working hard to describe one of the settings in our story, The Lost Thing. We certainly got the atmosphere right, and ended up with goosebumps at our own writing! ✍️

Week Beginning: 2nd October 2023

Freezing and melting: We investigated different solids and melting points. We predicted that some solids would never melt. The challenge was making a tinfoil boat 🚀 to float the solids in.

In English, we have been writing directions. This proved trickier than we thought, as we put them to the test to see if they got us to our destination... 🌳 🏠 πŸš—

Geography: We made a model of a river, starting with a trickle of water for the source and finishing with the estuary to pour into the sea. 🌊

D.T: We had the challenge of making a reciprocating lever. It proved tricky in places but we persevered and ended with success.

Week Beginning 25th September 2023

R.E: As part of our learning about Moses and the Exodus, we made and tasted some flat bread (still used in Holy Communion today) to think about the Jewish people escaping the Egyptians. The bread had to be unleavened because they did not have time for it to rise and had to escape quickly.🍞 🚫

D.T: We have been reviewing some levers and thinking about how we can improve the structure before we make our moving picture. πŸ’ πŸ’‘

Week Beginning 18th September 2023

Design Technology βœ‚οΈ We have been practising the skill of making a working lever using fixed pivots. To be successful, the output needed to be an oscillating movement.

Maths: Kingfisher class have been working hard on partitioning three-digit numbers. 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣s 1️⃣0️⃣s. 1️⃣s

Week Beginning: 11th September 2023

Marvellous Maths! Kingfisher made a strong start to maths today by partitioning numbers into tens and ones. πŸ”’

English: Kingfisher had word-banks and they had to decide which words had the strongest meaning. We used dictionaries to help us with the trickier ones. πŸ“š

Jigsaw: We had a lovely discussion in Jigsaw about our achievements and goals for Year 3πŸ… πŸ₯…

What a successful first week - fabulous work Kingfisher!

08.09.23- STEM WOW DAY, session 1. In Kingfisher classroom, we focussed on gas and were challenged to make the balloon travel along the string.
We found that smaller balloons travelled faster. 🎈

Our balloon rockets in action! We had some fails, but part of the activity was to work out a solution.
