Autumn 1

Our Autumn 1 topic is

Clockwork

Scroll down to see daily updates and photos of what we've been learning and the fun we've been having in class!

14.10.22 We’ve spent the last 6 weeks studying the book ‘Hugo Cabret’ in English and it’s fair to say we’ve absolutely loved it! Our end of term treat was to watch the film version of the book. We loved it almost as much as the book! Here’s some of us trying to get comfy for the film 🍿 🎥

13.10.22 Swan class take on The M.A.D Museum - here’s a 60 second compilation of us wandering around the museum in awe!

13.10.22 What an amazing trip we had - The M.A.D Museum had so many wonderfully engaging automata toys for us to see and the giant marble run was a hit!

We even found an area which was perfect for a class game of tig to release some energy after having our lunch! So many members of the public walked past and smiled at how much fun we were having.

Several attempts at a class picture - here’s the end result! 😃🤪

12.10.22 Sustainable Science! We used recycled cereal boxes to build a working periscope in our Science topic on light.

10.10.22 We’ve worked so hard to produce this amazing writing based on our English text ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’

09.10.22 Using the iPads to research Guru Nanak in R.E

06.10.22 We’ve become increasingly invested in our Guided Reading text ‘Clockwork Or All Wound Up’ 🕰 Today, we read Fritz’s story and worked on retrieving information from the text by skimming and scanning.

05.10.22 We’ve been making shadows in Science! We can use the language transparent, translucent and opaque, describe how shadows are formed and explain the relationship between the shape of an object and the shape of its shadow.

03.10.22 We had a wonderful Jigsaw lesson today focusing on things that we ‘need’ and things that we ‘want’. When we wrote a list of things we’d buy with unlimited money and highlighted the things that were a ‘want’ and not a ‘need’, we realised how different those things are! We talked about Maslow’s hierarchy of need and how your learning would be impacted if your basic needs weren’t met. We empathised with people in this country and others who live this reality and thought about how lucky lots of us are to have all of our needs met.

30.09.22 We’ve been learning about common factors in Maths and it’s been amazing to see the children grow in confidence in their Maths lessons. They are working hard at being good partners and working together to solve problems.

22.09.22 Swan class are becoming more of a team each day. We were using selection commands in scratch for our Computing lesson today, otherwise known as ‘if, then, else’ commands and it was tricky! Some of our more confident classmates put on their coaching hats- team work really does make the dream work!

20.09.22 A snapshot of our morning spent writing an internal monologue in the role of protagonist Hugo Cabret. We’re starting to feel more confident writing independently, as well as using thesauruses and our working wall to magpie vocabulary. Stay tuned for the final published pieces!

16.09.22 Our wonderful heroes for this week! Well done Archie and Maisie-Ann. You have both oozed positivity this week and I couldn’t be more proud! 🦢

14.09.22 I had to post this snippet of picture day, as the photographer complimented us for being the best behaved class that she’d seen all day! That’s a reputation we’re all very happy to have as role models for younger children in our school!

12.09.22 Becoming more of a ‘place value pro’ every day! We’ve been using place value charts to revise our understanding of multiplying and dividing by powers of 10.

09.09.22 we began the day with a zoom assembly from Resus Rangers, telling us about first aid around the world. We were joined virtually by approximately 6000 other children!

08.09.22 Does light travel in a straight line? We set up an investigation to find out!

05.09.22 We started our first day back with some writing about our Holly Hill Way. We had a meaningful discussion about how to always respect ourselves, each other and our school and made a promise to always choose to be the best.

Dear new Swan class,

Tomorrow is the day! I've been in our classroom this summer preparing for your return. If you look on our class page, you can see some pictures of what your new classroom looks like. I know that starting a new class with a new teacher can be scary, especially after 5 weeks at home, but I'm so excited to see you and to start all of the wonderful things that we get to do in Year 6. We'll feel like a school family in no time. Get a good night's sleep and I'll see you tomorrow! heart Miss Fretwell

A couple of things for you and your adults to remember...

- Remember to line up at the right door in the morning! It will no longer be main reception. Walk down the drive until you see the yellow railing where the Y5/6 fire door is and wait for me there. I'll be out to collect you at 8:50am.

- We have a couple of new children starting our school/class tomorrow, so if you're one of those children, you can wait at main reception and one of our lovely TA's will come and collect you and show you where your locker is and bring you to class. I can't wait to meet you!

- You don't need to bring a pencil case - you have your very own pen pot all to yourself full of everything you need.

- We will have P.E on Tuesday, so you might want to bring it with you tomorrow and leave it in your locker so you have it ready for then. Our new P.E coach is Mr Ellis (you might recognise him when you see him, he was the Year 3/4 coach last year!)
