Autumn 1 Year 5 and 6 Knowledge Organiser

Monday 5th September

The children had a fabulous first day back at school today. Everyone came in smiling this morning and after settling in they were all ready to work. Today we’ve spent time talking about our class Rules and Expectations and we’ve looked closely at the Holly Hill Way. We also started our Jigsaw program today and the children carried out some activities about their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the year ahead.

Well done Owls for such a fabulous and enthusiastic start to Year 5.

Meet the Owl crew.  Here are all the fabulous faces who will be making Owl Class amazing this year 🤣

Friday 14th October

Woooaaaw this is the BEST place Ever.”

(Kaelon on walking into the Mad Museum this morning)

This just about sums up our day in Stratford upon Avon today. We’ve had a fabulous day and all the children have been absolutely wonderful! We started the day in the museum exploring all of the mechanical models. The children were able to spot all the mechanisms that we’ve been learning about it class.  They loved the hands on parts of the museum and made their own marble runs. After lunch and a play on the green we walked along the river to the Holy Trinity Church. We saw the grave of William Shakespeare and his family and had a look around the rest of the church. What a really lovely day we had!

Well done Owls for your first half term in Year 5. You’ve all worked so very hard and you deserve a rest. Have a lovely holiday and we’ll see you in two weeks 😁

One of the favourites.

 Meet Owl Class Counillors.
Well done Poppy and Gretchen.

Enjoying lunch time with friends. 🍅🥪🧃

Friday 23rd September.
Today the Owls voted for who they wanted to be their class Councillors. The children had to submit a short letter to the class stating why they should be our councillor. We had 8 candidates. Their letters were all wonderful and they had some really thoughtful ideas for what they could do for our school. The results will be in on Monday.

Heroes

This week Arlo is an Owl Hero. I’m so proud of him for settling well. Arlo has really enjoyed our English text. He has joined in with talking about the text and he has answered many questions.
Ruben is a Hero for his beautifully presented work. His handwriting and presentation are both first class and really what we expect to see in Year 5. Ruben has also impressed me with some of his thoughtful replies in RE. When talking about the 10 commandments he told us that his idol was his big brother because he respects him and wants to be like him.

Thursday 22nd September

We have been working hard in English over the past week. We’ve studied the pictures at the start of the book, asked questions and made predictions.  We’ve explored the first few chapters of the novel- making inferences and using evidence from the text to back up our ideas. We have explored using better vocabulary by exploring synonyms. We’ve written Hugo’s internal monologue and have started to plan our next piece of writing- an action scene.

Friday 16th September. Making a cam mechanism

Friday 16th September

Heroes

Well done to our first Heroes of the school year. Esmai has settled perfectly into our school and has made some lovely friends in Owl. We’re very pleased to have you Esmai. Jack is also a class hero this week for just being amazing. Jack works so hard in every single lesson, he always puts his hand up to join in and his behaviour is impeccable.

Thursday 15th September.

Today we had our first computing lesson.  We used the program ‘Scratch’ to program a set of instructions to create a desired output. We used the toy shop background from our Hugo book. We made the character Papa George talk to his customers and show them his toys. The children loved the program and created some fabulous conversations.

Wednesday 14th September In Maths we continue our work on Number and Place value. Today we’re learning about Powers of 10.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II

After carrying out an Always, Sometimes, Never activity and justifying their ideas the children were asked to set up a model to show that light does in fact travel in straight lines.
