New to Y5/6 Welcome Meeting Slides

Welcome to Year 5 Kestrel Class

A very big welcome to you.  I am Ms Thomas - Kestrel class teacher and I look forward to working with your wonderful children this year in what I know will be an exciting year!

Working alongside me in our corridor will be Miss Mills, Miss Hill, Mrs Mosedale and Mrs Rawson so the children will recognise lots of familiar faces as they transition into Year 5.  At the top of this page you will see icons for each half term.  In these you'll be able to see regular updates about what we've been up to along with lots of photographs and examples of children's work too.

We are very much looking forward to our year ahead.

Year 5 and 6 Transition Meeting Slides from July

If you were not able to attend here are the slides from our Year 5 and 6 Parents' meeting at the end of last term.

Useful Information

PE.   The children will need to have their PE kits in school on a Tuesday.  The children have their own locker so it is absolutely fine for them to keep their kits in their locker for longer periods as this then prevents them forgetting their kit on PE Day.  Please make sure that earrings are removed for this day.

Reading.   Our school target is for children to read at least 5 times a week. In Year 5 they are able to fill in their own diaries if they wish.  During every day there will also be many opportunities for the children to read -Quiet individual reading, guided reading and activities and also reading in other curriculum areas too.  Please feel free to write any messages in your child's diary and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Spellings.  Spellings will be stuck in diaries for the whole of the half term and will be practised weekly.  In our SPaG sessions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) We not only practise the words - we learn about the Year 5 spelling rules and patterns so that the children can use these to help them spell similar words when they need to. We will have a spelling test on a Monday morning for these sets of words.   We also begin to learn the Year 5 and 6 Statutory words and a copy of these will be sent out for you to keep at home.  Some children may have their own alternative spelling lists, or they may still need practise with previous statutory lists.  If this is the case these will be sent home and communicated to you via your child's reading diary.

Homework.  Homework throughout school will be reading, spellings and times table practise.  The children will also receive their login details for Mathletics and TT Rock Stars and they will be able to use these at home too.

Transition into Year 5

The children had a fabulous two mornings in July getting a feel for their new environment, and getting to know me.  We carried out lots of fun activities and had some really interesting discussions and ideas.  The children produced some fantastic work for our class display.  During the first week of term look out for photographs of our completed class display board showcasing our art.

I have been working hard to prepare the classroom ready for the children starting in September - look out for a video showing you around on our first day!
