Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School

Spring 2

Welcome back. Hope everyone is reenergised for our new half-term. This half term we are focusing on the Anglo Saxons in our topic ‘Fight for the crown’. We will be looking at the history of the Anglo-Saxons, their heroic stories and the skills they had in jewellery making and book illustration. Have a look at our knowledge organiser below to see what activities we will be doing.

Weekly Updates

In English we have been working on creating kenning poems (using hyphenated words to describe something using clues instead of saying what it is) - can you work out what characters they describe?

We had a fantastic history lesson working in groups to map out an Anglo Saxon settlement to include the main features we had researched.

On Thursday it was international maths day so we had some fun doing some practical maths activities. We explored the concept of perimeter outside with a fun game of perimeter and area and then used some resources to model different types of rectilinear perimeter calculations.

We looked at illuminated letters in our Art lesson and had a practise tracing some of the illustrations and decorative details that would have been included in the letter design. (photos to follow)

______________________________________

We had a fantastic world book day creating our competition entries for the next year’s reading diary cover and making bookmarks among other reading related activities. We also had some great book related artwork submissions for the school competition!

_________________________________________________

In art we used clay to make our brooches.

______________________________________

We had a great Jigsaw lesson learning about helping keep others healthy in an emergency situation. We practised putting someone into the recovery position.

_________________________________________

In PE the children are learning all about lacrosse and have been developing the correct position to hold the stick to be able to throw the ball using a catapult action.

______________________________________

In science this week we focused on gravity and created a mind map of everything we should know about gravity.

___________________________________________

This week in art we practised different sketches using the Anglo-Saxon features to create a design for an Anglo-Saxon brooch. They had to think about the symmetry of their design and how parts could be made 3D in the brooch form.

In RE we have started this half-term looking at the Islamic faith and the 5 pillars of Islam and their belief in Allah and how they worship him (photos to follow).

__________________________________________

In Jigsaw this half-term we are focusing on keeping healthy and making informed choices and not being influenced by peer pressure or the media. Over these first 2 weeks we have looked at how smoking and drinking can affect us, including impacts on our bodies and minds and the risk of anti-social behaviours.

In English this week we have been building up to writing the opening to the battle scene in Beowulf. We have looked at show not tell strategies for describing emotions, creating tension through describing using all our senses and writing from another characters perspective. They used all these skills to write their opening paragraphs for the build up to the battle and will be editing these next week before working on our battle scene narratives.

____________________________________________

We have started our science topic looking at forces and have created a double page spread showing all the forces we will be exploring this half-term.

________________________________________

We started our artwork looking at an incredible hoard of Anglo-Saxon artefacts discovered at Sutton Hoo and sketching some of the key features: interlaced serpents, repeated geometric patterns, and hidden human and animal figures and faces.

______________________________________

In Maths we have started our topic looking at decimals and using our skills of finding equivalent fractions to convert them to have a denominator of 10, 100 or 1000 and then using our knowledge of place value to position the numbers in the correct place value positions.

______________________________________

We started our English this half-term looking at the old English version of the Beowolf heroic poem before introducing the modern version written by Michael Morpurgo.

We finished off our computing lessons from last half term - finally getting to use the microbits with our programming for a step counter. We then tested them with a walk around the hall!
