Holly Hill Primary and Nursery School

Swallows, Year 4, 2025 - 26

Welcome to Year 4 Swallow Class Page

A very big welcome to you. I am Mrs Balchin, Swallow class teacher and this year Swallow will be supported by Mr Close. Mrs Rawson will also be teaching in Swallow on a Wednesday morning.  We very much look forward to working with your children in what will be an exciting year ahead.
At the top of this page you can click on the icons for each half term.  You will be able to see regular updates about what we’ve been up to, lots of photographs of our learning and examples of children’s work too.
Please get in touch if we can help you in any way.

Reading

As a school we expect the children to read 5 times a week. The children can fill in their own diaries when they read in school. When you hear your child read it would be beneficial for you to fill in their diaries also. There are many opportunities within the school day where the children will be reading - guided reading, reading activities within an English lesson, reading in other topic areas and individual reading times also. The times where the children read their own reading materials are vital for them to build up their reading stamina. If your child is on a book banded book they will read to an adult 3 times a week. Please ensure books and diaries are in school daily.

Spellings

Spelling for the half term will be stuck in the children’s diaries and tested on a Friday. At school we also learn these, focussing on the spelling patterns and rules that the children can then apply to other similar words.

Times Tables

We will practise these daily and they will be tested weekly. After an initial times table assessment we will let you know which times tables the children are working on.
