Autumn 1
Week One:
We will learning about ourselves, our feelings and our locality this term, through our Amazing Me topic.

We have enjoyed our first few days
This week we have been reading 'The Colour Monster' and talking about our feelings. This is part of our 'Amazing Me' topic!

Puffins have been learning all about the names of the body parts, we named and labelled some external parts and also spoke about some of our important organs. We finished with a little song, can you sing it with your child...

There are no items in this Multi Image Block
Well done to our heroes this week - all of our Puffins are Perfect
Week Two:
The children have been doing some brilliant learning in our general provision, some children have enjoying weighing different objects and seeing what made the scales move up and down. They have also been investigating how they could adjust ramps and then measuring how far the cars travelled.
We have started PSHE using our Jigsaw program. Each week we have circle time and discuss keeping ourselves safe. This week we met Jigsaw Jack and wrote our class charter. All the children loved listening to our special chime.
I sent home the letter for the pantomime yesterday (oh yes I did), please complete and return asap. It is such a wonderful event and we have so much fun. If, for some reason you have not got a letter, please let me know and I can get you another one.
Week 3
We believe one of the best ways children learn is through play. We carefully set up the continuous provision to give them opportunities to learn. This week children have strengthened their fine motor skills, defined their writing skills, looked at the insides of the human body and studied where they live and looked at maps.
We went on a senses walk around school. Speak to your child see if they can remember what they are?
Week 4
We had a great time walking through Selston. This was part of our foundation subjects where we are learning about where we live in Geography, how our area has changed in history and the church in RE.
In RE we did some amazing collaboration, as we added illustrations to psalm 23 - the discussions and shared work was fantastic, what amazing Year 1's!
Week 5
We have started on phase 5 in phonics this week in year 1 and start to grow the code looking at different ways to write sounds. We have looked at:
ay (ai), oy (oi) ou (ow) and ea (ee). I will be posting a video soon so you can hear how we say them, if you want to ask please ask me on the door.
Reading Breakfast
Thank you to all the parents who came for reading breakfast, we love it when parents visit us in our classroom and it is great to welcome so many in.
Jigsaw: We have spoken about feeling proud this week, lots of children shared times when they were proud. One child spoke of feeling proud when they did Maths, one spoke about when they got gymnastics awards. They all agreed that feeling proud was a nice feeling. Speak to your child and share with them times when they have made you proud.
History
In history we have been looking at how our school and how schools in general have changed. We spoke about how strict schools used to be and even that some children were punished by being hit by a stick (cane). The children then went off and were acting out schools from the past.
Week 6
This week we have started reading Six Dinner Sid. Thank you to all that have shared stories and pictures with your children, it certainly gave them confidence to share information with their class. We will be doing work linked to this for the next two weeks.
HW Sheets
Year One children will all be sent phonics homework sheets this week. We have started to look at alternative ways we may write sounds this term, but most of this term is a recap. It is vitally important that children are secure with all these sounds and know the tricky words. Please take time to practise them before we come back after half term.
A Special Visitor
We had a surprise visitor to Puffins this week. Spider-Man popped in to check on children's writing. We have been working hard to try and remember finger spaces, and we have been discussing how Spider-Man likes to do his finger spaces. We could not believe he popped in to check we had added them!
Crocodile Maths
We have been doing greater, fewer and the same in Maths. We sung a song to help them try and remember which way to draw greater and fewer arrows: (I have attached the link so you can look at it with your child)

For our History, we have been exploring how schools were in the past compared to now. We are very lucky that Mrs Brooks and Mrs Cooper came to Holly Hill when they were younger and answered lots of questions for us.
Week 7
Looking after Selston:
We have been thinking about how we can look after our area of Selston and here are some of the posters that Puffins made to show this.

Sentences
We have been working on simple sentences about Six Dinner Sid. We have been practising saying them orally and putting them in our special box to carry to our tables. We have then been opening our box and trying to then write the sentence independently! They wrote some amazing things, try and keep practising over the holidays...say it before you write is our motto! Lots of children then chose to go and write in the provision.

Maths
We have been working on number bonds, using double-sided counters.

so, this would be written as 3 + 3 = 6 or 6 = 3 + 3

Ask your child what the number sentences may be for this one? You can practice using different sided counters.
